Abstract:
(EN) A liquid crystal device (5) having smectic phase liquid crystal material in two transparent states of differing molecular orientation, each state presenting a different refractive index to polarised light transmitted therethrough, may be utilised to perform various optical functions. For example, switchable waveguides (6, 7) a ring resonator or a diffraction grating may be produced by appropriate arrangement of the material in the two states.
(FR) Un dispositif à cristaux liquides (5) comprend un matériau de cristaux liquides à phase smectique en deux états transparents d'orientation moléculaire différente, chaque état présentant un index de réfraction différent à la lumière polarisée émise à travers le matériau. Ledit dispositif peut être utilisé pour remplir différentes fonctions optiques. Des guides d'ondes commutables (6, 7), un résonateur en anneau ou un réseau de diffraction peuvent par exemple être produits grâce à un agencement approprié du matériau dans les deux états.
