Abstract:
(EN) Method of and apparatus for making metal castings using a polystyrene pattern (10) embedded in unbonded sand (20) which is consolidated to form a mould (M) in which is defined a mould cavity (C). Molten metal is fed into the cavity (C) and permitted to solidify to form a casting (11). The metal is aluminium or an aluminium alloy and at least part of the mould is formed of sand which comprises at least 50% zircon sand, or other particulate material suitable for making a mould and having a bulk density lying in the range 2-3 grams/cc. The mould (M) may have a moulding feature (9) having upper and lower surfaces for contact with the metal and which projects inwardly of the mould cavity (C) from the main wall thereof and the length of any one section of the moulding feature (9) being at least twice the thickness of the thinnest part thereof by which the section is connected to the main wall of the mould cavity.
(FR) Procédé et dispositif de production de moulages en métal utilisant un modèle en polystyrène (10) noyé dans du sable non lié (20) qui est consolidé pour former un moule (M) dans lequel est définie une cavité de moule (C). Le métal en fusion est versé dans la cavité (C) et laissé se solidifier pour former un moulage (11). Le métal se compose d'aluminium ou d'un alliage d'aluminium et au moins une partie du moule est formée de sable comprenant au moins 50% de sable de zircon, ou un autre matériau particulaire indiqué pour former un moule et possédant une densité apparente comprise entre deux et trois grammes/cc. Le moule (M) peut présenter un élément de moulage (9), possédant ds surfaces supérieure et inférieure de contact avec le métal, faisant saillie à l'intérieur de la cavité du moule C à partir de sa paroi principale, la longueur d'une section quelconque de l'élément de moulage (9) étant au moins égale au double de l'épaisseur de sa partie la plus mince reliant la section à la paroi principale de la cavité du moule.
