Drawing on the observation that a signal which is magnetically recorded near the edge of a magnetic tape (12) not only projects a magnetic field that is above (and below) the plane of the tape, but also projects a field that extends away from the edge thereof, the invention calls for (tracking-) control of relative head-to-tape positioning in response to the edge-projected field of a pre-recorded edge-positioned tracking control signal (26), whereby the tightness of such control is governed directly by the spacing loss equation.

Puisqu'on a pu observer qu'un signal enregistré magnétiquement près du bord d'une bande magnétique (12) projette non seulement un champ magnétique se situant au-dessus (et au-dessous) du plan de la bande mais également un champ qui s'étend en s'éloignant dudit bord, la présente invention propose une commande (de guidage) de la position relative tête-bande en réponse au champ projeté par le bord d'un signal de commande de guidage par le bord (26) d'une bande pré-enregistrée, la précision d'une telle commande étant régie directement par l'équation de la perte d'espace.
