A looper apparatus (18) for a multiple-needle tufting machine having a hook bar (20, 70, 20', 122) including a transversely extending recess (30, 72, 90, 128) opening through the front face of the hook bar (20, 70, 20', 122) and receiving a transverse gauge bar or member (35, 75, 95, 130) having transversely spaced vertical hook slots (38, 78, 98, 133) for receiving the shank portions (41, 111) of corresponding looper hooks (40, 40', 110, 110'). A clamp assembly including a plurality of clamp members (53, 83, 93, 135) assembled within the lower portion of the gauge bar (35, 75, 95, 130) so that each clamp member (53, 83, 93, 135) is adapted to engage the bottom edges of the shank portions (41, 111) of a pair of adjacent hooks (40, 40', 110, 110') in clamping position. Each clamp member (53, 83, 93, 135) is adapted to be moved to its clamping position by a corresponding set screw (57, 87, 100, 137) extending upwardly through the lower portion of the gauge bar (35, 75, 95, 130). The clamp members (53, 83, 93, 135) are preferably in the form of clamp balls.
