1. (WO1985004493) CONNECTION APPARATUS FOR OPTICAL FIBERS

CLAIMS:
1. A connector for an optical fiber comprising:
a housing for supporting said optical fiber, said housing including an exteriorly accessible opening for receipt of an optical device therein for optical connection with said fiber; and
a cover including means for movably supporting the cover on said housing adjacent said aperture, said cover being movable for covering and uncovering said aperture to provide access to said opening, said cover including locking means for cooperative engagement with said optical device for locking said optical device in said housing upon movement of said cover.
2. The connector of claim 1 further including securing means for movably securing said cover to said housing.
3. A connector of claim 2 wherein said securing means compri ses:
said cover including a pair of side edge, each of said side edges having thereon a cavity; and
said housing including a pair of projections, each projection engageable with one of said cavities of said cover, said cover being pivotally movable about said projection in said cavities.
4. A connector of claim 1 wherein said cover is movable from a first position closing said opening to a second position providing access to said opening and to a third position locking said optical device in said housing.
5. A connector of claim 4 wherein said cover locking element includes an extending lip, said lip of said cover engageable with a portion of said optical device upon movement of said cover to said third position.
6. An optical connection apparatus for connecting an optical fiber comprising:
a first elongate housing for supporting a first optical fiber, said housing including a longitudinal channel therein and a transverse opening in communication with said channel;
a second elongate housing for supporting a second optical fiber for connection to said first fiber, said second housing being insertable into said channel of said first housing to place said first and second fibers in optical connection;
a cover movabTy positioned on said first housing for movement from a first position covering said traverse aperture to a second position uncovering said aperture to thereby provide access for said second housing to said channel; and
locking means on said cover for providing
cooperative locking engagement between said first and second housings for locking said second housing in said channel of said first housing.
7. An apparatus in accordance with claim 6 wherein said locking means comprises:
a housing extent on said second housing
insertable into said channel, said housing extent having an extending traverse expanse; and
a lip on said cover, said lip engageable with said housing extent upon movement of said cover to said third position thereby locking said second housing in said channel of said first housing.
8. An apparatus for optically connecting a pair of fiber optic cables, each cable including a pair of optical fibers said apparatus comprising:
an elongate receptacle including a first
receptacle end for accommodating one of said pairs of cables and a second end having a transverse opening for optically exposing the end of the optical fibers of said one pair, said opening being in communication with a central channel in said second end of said receptacle;
an elongate plug including a first plug end for accommodating the other cable of said pair, said plug, having a second plug end opposite said first pTug end inclu ng means or support ng the ends of the opt ca fibers of said other cable for optical transmission, said second plug end being insertable into said second
receptacle end to place the fibers of each of said cables in optical connection; and
a cover movably supported on said second
receptacle end adjacent said transverse opening, said cover being movable from a first position covering said opening thereby preventing insertion of said plug end into said channel of said second receptacle end, to a second position uncovering said transverse opening thereby rendering accessible said channel of said second receptacle end, said cover further being movable to a third position in locking engagement with said plug, thereby locking said second plug end in said channel of said second receptacle end.
9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said cover is
frangibly mounted to said receptacle.
10. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said cover is
di sengageabl e from said receptacle upon impact of an external load on said plug received in said second
receptacle end.
