Excimer radiation in the range of 248-400nm does not operate by the same thermal processes which restrict the medical use of conventional lasers in medicine. Radiation from an excimer laser (10) is delivered to pathological sites in the body through optical means (25). In one embodiment, the radiation is conveyed by means of a fused silica fiberoptic waveguide (25) through a hollow catheter (27) which is inserted into the vasculature for ultimate delivery to the atherosclerotic lesion in the coronary arteries. In another embodiment the excimer laser radiation is delivered to the pathological situs in the body by endoscopic means (28). In another embodiment the excimer laser radiation is delivered to the pathological situs in the body by means of a focusing lens (29). As a result of the excimer laser's relative lack of thermal destructive effects on tissues adjacent to the incident beam, and the capacity for highly localized delivery, the clinical utility of laser radiation in surgical procedures is substantially enhanced by use of this invention.

Une radiation d'excision dans la plage comprise entre 248 et 400 nm ne provoque pas les mêmes processus thermiques qui limitent l'utilisation médicale des lasers conventionnels. La radiation produite par un laser exciseur (10) est amenée jusqu'aux sites pathologiques dans le corps à l'aide d'organes optiques (25). Dans un mode de réalisation, la radiation est véhiculée à l'aide d'un guide d'onde à fibres optiques à base de silice fondue (25) à travers un cathéter creux (27) qui est inséré dans le réseau vasculaire et parvient finalement à la lésion athérosclérotique dans les artères coronaires. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, la radiation émise par le laser exciseur est amenée jusqu'au site pathologique dans le corps à l'aide d'un organe endoscopique (28). Dans encore un autre mode de réalisation, la radiation produite par le laser exciseur est véhiculée à l'aide d'une lentille de focalisation (29). Grâce à l'absence relative d'effets thermiques destructifs provoqués par le laser exciseur sur les tissus adjacents au faisceau incident, et grâce à la possibilité d'une application très localisée, la présente invention permet d'améliorer considérablement l'utilisation clinique de la radiation laser dans des interventions chirurgicales.
