Abstract

Coated cutting tools and coated cutting tool inserts having improved mechanical and chemical wear resistance under demanding conditions of machining speed, temperature, or workpiece hardness comprise a silicon nitride substrate body having at least one hard, intermediate adherent coating layer of a refractory material and an outer adherent coating layer. The intermediate adherent coating layer has a different chemical composition than the outer adherent coating layer. The silicon nitride substrate body consists essentially of a first phase of silicon nitride and a refractory second phase comprising silicon nitride and an effective amount of a densification aid selected from the group consisting of silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, yttrium oxide, hafnium oxide, zirconium oxide, the lenthanide rare earth oxides, and mixtures thereof.

Outils de coupe revêtus et pièces rapportées d'outils de coupe revêtus présentant une résistance accrue à l'usure mécanique et chimique dans des conditions extrêmes de vitesse d'usinage, de température ou de dureté de la pièce à usiner. Les outils de coupe comprennent un corps de substrat en nitrure de silicium possédant au moins une couche dure adhérente intermédiaire de revêtement en un matériau réfractaire et une couche adhérente externe de revêtement. La couche adhérente intermédiaire de revêtement présente une composition chimique différente de celle de la couche adhérente externe de revêtement. Le corps de substrat en nitrure de silicium se compose essentiellement d'une première phase de nitrure de silicium et d'une deuxième phase réfractaire comprenant du nitrure de silicium et une quantité efficace d'un agent densifiant sélectionné dans le groupe composé de dioxyde de silicium, oxyde d'aluminium, oxyde de magnésium, oxyde d'yttrium, oxyde d'hafnium, oxyde de zirconium, les oxydes de terres rares lanthanides et leurs mélanges.
