Abstract:
(EN) Molecules or cells of materials exhibiting a microbiological activity, suppression or interaction of interest are isolated from a large population of similar molecules, cells or the like. The activity of the microbiologically active molecules or living matter of interest is measured by suspending the population in a liquid medium capable of forming a gel. The resultant suspension is formed into droplets which are caused to gel. The gel droplets (GNDs) are treated to effect desirable alteration of the microbiologically active material and the amount of metabolites or reaction products of the desired alteration within each of the gel droplets. Alternatively, incubation is carried out such that each GMD initially containing one cell contains many, a microcolony, which can be tested for desirable properties while retaining sufficient viable cells for further growth and harvesting for further testing and/or production. The gel droplets are then separated based upon the measured or sensed characteristic, metabolite or reaction product.
(FR) Des molecules ou des cellules de materiaux presentant une activite microbiologique, la suppression d'une activite ou une interaction presentant un interet, sont isolees a partir d'une large population de molecules ou de cellules similaires. L'activite des molecules presentant une activite microbiologique ou de la substance vivante est mesuree en mettant la population en suspension dans un milieu liquide susceptible de former un gel. La suspension obtenue est separee sous forme de gouttes qui sont gelifiees. Les gouttelettes de gel sont traitees en vue de produire la modification desirable du materiau presentant une activite biologique et la quantite de metabolites ou de produit de reaction de la modification desiree est determine dans chacune des gouttelettes. En variante on effectue une incubation de telle sorte que chaque gouttelette qui contenait initialement une cellule en contienne de nombreuses, une microcolonie, qui peut faire l'objet de tests en ce qui concerne les proprietes desirables tout en conservant suffisamment de cellules viables pour une culture et une recolte ulterieure en vue d'autres tests et/ou de production. Les gouttelettes de gel sont ensuite separees en se basant sur une caracteristique mesuree ou detectee, sur le metabolite ou le produit de reaction.
