Abstract

Battery separators are provided for maintenance-free lead-acid batteries. From 10 to 90 percent by weight of the fiber content of the battery separator is comprised of a non-metallic acicular mineral, wollastonite, that is substantially less expensive than the microglass fibers used heretofore yet provides comparable, and even superior results with respect to electrolyte absorption and retention characteristics of the battery separator material. The microglass fibers used heretofore also are used in the battery separator of the present invention together with a minor amount, 5-15 percent, of synthetic binder fiber.

Separateurs de batterie pour des batteries plomb-acide sans entretien. De 10 a 90% en poids de la teneur en fibres du separateur de batterie consiste en un minerai aciculaire non metallique, la wollastonite, qui est sensiblement moins chere que les fibres de micro-verre utilisees jusqu"a present tout en donnant des resultats comparables et memes superieurs par rapport aux caracteristiques d"absorption et de retenue de l"electrolyte du materiau de separateur de batterie. Les fibres de micro-verre utilisees jusqu"a present sont egalement utilisees dans le separateur de batterie de la presente invention en une petite quantite, (5- 15%), de fibres synthetiques de liaison.
