A power plant for exploitation of the temperature difference between different water layers in a pelagic area (2), comprising a closed system which is filled with ethane which is both in the liquid and vapour phases. The system comprises two heat exchanging apparatuses (13, 9) which are in fluid communication with each other, of which the first (13) supplies heat to the ethane by means of heat exchange with water from a relatively warmer water layer, while the other (9) removes heat from the ethane by means of heat exchange with water from a colder water layer, whereby a difference in pressure is created in the system which is utilized to take energy out of the system. In order to make the system large enough and the ethane pressure high enough to give a reasonable power yield, the heat exchanging apparatuses are placed in respective chambers (5, 4) which are comprised by cavities in solid or consolidated rock (1). The necessary fluid communications (6, 17) and water pipes (10, 12, 15, 16) are also blasted in the rock with fluid cross-sections large enough to make pressure losses small.

Une installation de production d"energie permettant l"exploitation de la difference de temperature entre differentes couches d"eau dans une zone pelagique (2), comprend un systeme ferme rempli avec de l"ethane en phase liquide et en phase vapeur. Le systeme comprend deux dispositifs d"echange de chaleur (13, 9) en communication fluide l"un avec l"autre, le premier de ces dispositifs (13) fournissant de la chaleur a l"ethane au moyen de l"echange de chaleur avec l"eau provenant d"une couche d"eau relativement plus chaude, tandis que l"autre dispositif (9) extrait la chaleur de l"ethane au moyen de l"echange de chaleur avec l"eau provenant d"une couche d"eau plus froide, ce qui cree une difference de pression dans le systeme qui est utilisee pour extraire de l"energie du systeme. Afin que le systeme soit suffisamment grand et la pression de l"ethane suffisamment elevee pour donner un rendement energetique raisonnable, les dispositifs d"echange de chaleur sont places dans des chambres respectives (5, 4) contenues dans des cavites dans la roche solide ou consolidee (1). Les communications de fluide necessaires (6, 17) et les conduites d"eau (10, 12, 15, 16) sont aussi creusees a l"explosif dans la roche, les sections transversales de fluide etant suffisamment larges pour reduire les pertes de pression.
