(EN)For producing vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation, a laser apparatus, (Fig. 1) for inverting a population in an atomic or molecular species is provided. Energy is stored in a first species, (50) and a laser induced collisional energy transfer from that first species, (50) to a selected dis-sociative molecular state of a second species, (51) causes an inversion of one of the constituents of the second species, (51). This is represented, in one embodiment, (Fig. 1) of the present invention which utilizes a second species, (51) comprising a diatomic molecule, by the reaction. (FORMULA) where A and A* are the ground and excited states of the first species, (50) denoted as the storage species; (BC) and (BC)* are the ground and excited states of the second species, (51) which comprises atoms B and C, and B* is the excited state of atom B, which excited state is inverted.
