Abstract

A primary electrochemical cell (1) having a carbon current collector cathode structure of improved design. The electrochemical cell includes an elongated housing (2) containing an electrolyte solution (5) and a battery stack (3) in contact with the electrolyte solution. The battery stack includes a concentric arrangement of an anode (7), a porous separator (8), and a carbon current collector cathode structure (9). The carbon current collector cathode structure in accordance with the invention includes a vertical stacked array of annular-shaped porous carbon elements having coaxially aligned openings therein. An elongated, hollow, metal current collector tube (14) having a large number of small openings (20) formed therein for its entire length is disposed within and along the openings in the array of carbon elements and in direct physical contact with the carbon elements. The electrolyte solution in the cell is supplied directly to the array of carbon elements and also by way of the openings in the current collector tube. The carbon elements have a network of electrolyte-conducting channels therein and respond to the electrolyte solution received thereby to swell or expand outwardly against the porous separator and anode. As a result, constituent particles of the carbon elements fill the openings in the current collector tube, thereby permanently locking the array of carbon elements to the tube.

Cellule electrochimique (1) primaire possedant une structure de cathode de collecteur de courant en charbon de forme amelioree. La cellule electrochimique comprend un boitier allonge (2) contenant une solution d'electrolyte (5) et une pile de batterie (3) en contact avec la solution d'electrolyte. La pile de batterie comprend une disposition concentrique d'une anode (7), un separateur poreux (8), et une structure (9) de cathode de collecteur de courant en charbon. La structure de cathode de collecteur de courant en charbon conformement a la presente invention comprend une rangee empilee verticalement d'elements en charbon poreux en forme d'anneau dont les ouvertures sont alignees coaxialement. Un tuyau (14) metallique collecteur de courant, allonge et creux, possedant de nombreuses petites ouvertures (20) formees sur toute sa longueur est dispose a l'interieur et le long des ouvertures dans la rangee d'elements de charbon et en contact physique direct avec les elements de charbon. La solution d'electrolyte dans la cellule est distribuee directement vers la rangee d'elements de charbon et aussi dans le tuyau collecteur de courant au moyen des ouvertures. Les elements de charbon possedent a l'interieur un reseau de canaux conducteurs de l'electrolyte et reagissent a la solution d'electrolyte recue au moyen de ces canaux pour gonfler ou se dilater vers l'exterieur contre le separateur poreux et l'anode. Comme consequence, des particules constituant les elements de charbon remplissent les ouvertures a l'interieur du tuyau collecteur de courant, liant ainsi au tuyau de maniere permanente la rangee d'elements de charbon.
