Abstract

Improved electrostatic shield (10) which is adapted to be mounted on the applicator of a conventional diathermy apparatus between the radiating electrode thereof and the patient receiving treatment. The shield (10) is comprised of a first and a second plurality of electrically conductive strips (24, 28) which form the body portion of the shield and which encircle the current carrying coil (16) of the radiating electrode. The strips (28) likewise form the face portion (14) of the shield and define a plane which is generally parallel to the plane formed by the current carrying coil (16). Each strip of the face portion (14) is preferably coupled with one of the strips of the body portion. However, the face portion strips (28) of the shield extend generally radially in ward from the outer periphery of the surface defined by the face of the shield. These strips then terminate within the inner portion of the area defined by the shield such that the terminating end of the strips are electrically insulated from each other. A loop (26) is provided to surround and electrically couple each of the strips of the body portion of the shield. In this configuration, the strips comprise an electrostatic shield (10) which will impede electrostatic field radiated by the current carrying coil (16) located within the applicator head. The shield, however, allows passage of the radiated electromagnetic field in a relatively unimpeded fashion.

Blindage electrostatique ameliore (10) concu pour etre monte sur l'applicateur d'un dispositif conventionnel de diathermie entre l'electrode radiante de celui-ci et le patient recevant le traitement. Le blindage (10) comprend une premiere et une deuxieme pluralites de bandes electriquement conductrices (24, 28) qui forment la partie du corps du blindage et qui encerclent la bobine (16) porteuse de courant de l'electrode radiante. Les bandes (28) forment egalement la partie frontale (14) du blindage et definissent un plan qui est generalement parallele au la bobine (16) porteuse de courant. Chaque bande de la partie frontale (14) est couplee de preference avec une des bandes de la partie du corps. Toutefois, les bandes (28) de la partie frontale du blindage s'etendent generalement radialement vers l'interieur a partir de la peripherie exterieure de la surface definie par la face du bouclier. Ces bandes se terminent a l'interieur de la partie interieure de la zone definie par le blindage de maniere telle que les parties terminales des bandes soient isolees electriquement les unes des autres. Une boucle (26) entoure et couple electriquement chacune des bandes de la partie du corps du blindage. Dans cette configuration, les bandes forment un blindage electrostatique (10) qui arrete le champ electrostatique rayonne par la bobine (16) porteuse de courant situee a l'interieur de la tete de l'applicateur. Le blindage permet toutefois le passage relativement libre du champ magnetique rayonne.
