(EN)An apparatus for measuring air flow rate by using a hot-wire type air flowmeter which compensates for error caused by backflow of air and thereby measures true intaken air flow rate. This apparatus includes a calculator (52) for integrating the output from the hot-wire air flowmeter and thereby calculating an apparent air flow rate Qa=Q1+Q2, where Q1 represents the air flow rate during backflow period, and Q2 represents the air flow rate during forward flow period. The calculator (52) receives a signal from means (53) for detecting the backflow period of an internal combustion engine, and separates thereby the air flow rate Qa into the backflow air flow rate Q1 and the forward air flow rate Q2, then the difference (Q2-Q1) is calculated by another calculator, to produce the true air flow rate Q0.
