(EN)An electrical discharge machining apparatus which has an electrode (1) confronting a workpiece (3) through an insulating machining liquid, and electrode feed means (10) for controlling the position of the electrode (1) with respect to the workpiece (3), and which generates a discharge in a gap G between the electrode (1) and the workpiece (3) for machining the workpiece (3). This machine detects the difference between the present position and the most advanced position of the electrode with respect to the workpiece, judges the gap status in response to this detected result and thereby produces an output signal, and accurately observes the appropriateness of the gap status for electrical discharge machining, and consequently machines the workpiece under optimal machining conditions.
