(EN)A coal slurry containing 10-60% solids by weight is optionally first coarsely ground to about 20-80 mesh. Contaminant matter released thereby, may be separated by conventional means such as froth flotation which would eliminate a large proportion of the ash which is energy consuming as well as abrasive in nature. The "clean slurry" would now have water added back and would be further ground to about 100- 300 mesh particle size and would then be cavitated by sonic energy making the particle size even smaller and freeing any remaining contaminants including iron pyrites and ash. To this, a mixture of oil is added and the coal, oil mixture is then sonified during which process spherical agglomeration of the coal and oil occurs. The agglomerate and water mixture is screened to separate out most of the water leaving behind about 10-40% water in the coal, during which process the contaminants are also discharged with the water. The spherical agglomerates are mixed with a balance of oil to about. 6 times the weight of the coal to produce a stable thixotropic fuel with excellent pipe travel characteristics due to a migration of a thin film of water to the boundry layer between the bore of the pipe and the fuel. The process including the sonification steps is also useful generally in the separation of solids by agglomeration.
(FR)Une boue de charbon contenant 10-60% de solides en poids est d"abord broyee grossierement jusqu"a obtenir une dimension de particule de maille (20-80). Le materiau contaminant ainsi libere peut etre separe a l"aide de moyens conventionnels comme la flottation par ecumage qui peut eliminer une grande proportion des cendres qui consomment de l"energie et sont de nature abrasives. On reajouterait alors a la "boue propre" de l"eau, puis celle-ci serait broyee de nouveau jusqu"a obtenir une dimension de particule de 100-300, puis elle serait alors cavitee par l"energie sonique diminuant ainsi les dimensions des particules et liberant toutes les substances contaminantes residuelles y compris les pyrites de fer et les cendres. On y ajoute alors un melange de petrole et le melange de petrole et de charbon est alors soumis a un traitement sonique qui permet l"agglomeration spherique du charbon et du petrole. Le melange d"agglomerat et d"eau est passe au crible pour separer l"eau, ne laissant qu"environ 10-40% d"eau dans le charbon, procede qui permet egalement de decharger avec l"eau les substances contaminantes. Les agglomerats spheriques sont melanges avec une proportion equilibree de petrole jusqu"a environ 0, 6 fois le poids du charbon pour produire un combustible stable thixotrope avec d"excellentes caracteristiques d"acheminement dans les canalisations grace a une migration d"une fine pellicule d"eau vers la couche frontiere entre la canalisation et le combustible. Le procede, y compris les etapes de sonification, est egalement utile en general pour la separation de solides par agglomeration.
