(EN)Electrochemical cell (9), as well as a gas diffusion electrode (8) for the same. The electrode is of the type which is outwardly provided with a catalyst for converting gas to electricity and interiorly containing hydrophobic material. The distinguishing feature of the electrode is that the hydrophobic material comprises a cohesive porous plastics layer, which defines a closed gas space within the electrode, which the electrolyte cannot enter, although the electrode is immersed therein. On the other hand, gas can be sucked into and can pass out from said space. When the electrode (8) is partially immersed in the electrolyte (12), gas is automatically sucked from the atmosphere (13) above the electrolyte level in the cell and into the gas space, due to the subpressure in the space occurring during operation. By reason of the good capacity of the electrode it has been possible to make the cell according to the invention entirely closed off in relation to the surrounding atmosphere, which means a very simplified construction without gas conduits to the cell. The cell is especially utilizable as a metal/oxygen battery, fuel cell and metal oxide/hydrogen battery.
(FR)Une electrode de diffusion de gaz (8) est utilisee dans une cellule electrochimique (9). L"electrode est du type pourvu d"un catalyseur exterieur pour convertir du gaz en electricite et contenant interieurement un materiau hydrophobe. L"electrode est caracterisee par le fait que le materiau hydrophobe comprend une couche plastique cohesive poreuse, qui definit un espace gazeux ferme dans l"electrode"ou l"electrolyte ne peut entrer, bien que l"electrode soit immergee dans ce dernier. D"autre part, du gaz peut etre aspire dans cet espace et peut en sortir. Lorsque l"electrode (8) est partiellement immergee dans l"electrolyte (12), du gaz est automatiquement aspire depuis l"atmosphere (13) au-dessus du niveau de l"electrolyte de la cellule et dans l"espace gazeux, a cause de la basse pression regnant dans l"espace pendant l"operation. En raison de la bonne capacite de l"electrode, il a ete possible de fabriquer cette cellule entierement fermee par rapport a l"atmosphere environnante, ce qui permet une construction tres simplifiee depourvue de conduite de gaz connectee a la cellule. La cellule est specialement utilisable comme pile metal/oxygene, cellule a combustible et pile oxyde metallique/hydrogene.
