(EN)Method and apparatus for producing intense, consistent swirl and air-fuel-E.G.R.-vorticity charge uniformity and for promoting turbulence for flame stability and fuel economy through the R.P.M.-load phase space of engine operation. An intake port (1) is provided with a variable restriction means (2, 3) to produce a controlled high velocity wall attached intake flow (6) along the surface (7) of the intake port (1). An intermediate curvature (9) directs the intake flow (6) into the combustion chamber in the form of a coherent high velocity sheet oriented to produce swirl about the cylinder axis.
