(EN)An electrical discharge machining apparatus which roughly machines a workpiece (2) up to predetermined position with an electrode (1), and which then finishes the workpiece while rocking the same electrode (1) in a plane substantially perpendicular to the workpiece feeding direction. This apparatus incorporates electrodes feeding servo mechanisms (4), (14), (5), (6) and (7) for retaining a processing gap voltage constant, and mechanisms (13), (14), (5), (6) and (7) which do not lower the electrode (1) from a predetermined limit position (that is, the final machining position). The finishing process is completed by a signal from any of the following detectors: 1. Detectors (26), (27), (28) and (29) for detecting that the electrode has been located continuously at the limit position for a predetermined time. 2. A detector for detecting the lapse of a predetermined time from the time when the electrode initially reaches the limit position, or for detecting the completion of a predetermined number of rocking operations. 3. A detector for detecting that a gap voltage higher than predetermined voltage has been generated continuously for a predetermined time after the electrode has reached the limit position. The normal state of the machining gap is detected by an additional detector for operating a mechanism for sequentially increasing the amplitude of the rocking motion of the electrode.
