(EN)A catheter (10) having a tip which is resistant to plugging by blood components or other body fluids when used as a long term implant within a living body. A check valve is incorporated in the tip that is exposed to the blood stream or other body fluids. The central bore (11) within the catheter is closed at its downstream end. A cross bore or port (15) is provided immediately upstream from the closed end. This cross bore (16) is covered by a thin elastic sleeve to create a check valve. The pressure developed by injected infusate through the catheter opens the valve against the elastic force of the outer sleeve. Fluids cannot enter the catheter either by diffusion against the high velocity exit flow or by suction applied to the proximal end of the catheter.
(FR)Un catheter (10) possede une pointe resistante au bouchage ou tamponnement par des composants du sang ou autre fluide du corps lorsqu"il est utilise comme implant de longue duree dans un corps vivant. Un clapet de retenue est incorpore dans la pointe qui est exposee au courant sanguin ou autre fluide du corps. L"alesage central (11) dans le catheter est ferme a son extremite aval. Un alesage ou orifice transversal (15) est amenage immediatement en amont de l"extremite fermee. Cette alesage transversal (16) est recouvert d"un manchon elastique fin pour former une soupape de retenue. La pression developpee par le liquide injecte au travers du catheter ouvre la soupape contre la force elastique du manchon exterieur. Les fluides ne peuvent entrer dans le catheter, que ce soit par diffusion contre l"ecoulement de sortie a haute vitesse ou par aspiration appliquee a l"extremite du catheter.
