(EN)A binder composition in aqueous solution, suitable for use in the production of foundry sand moulds and cores is obtained by mixing (i) an alkali metal silicate (ii) a substantially water soluble carbohydrate selected from monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides and derivatives thereof and (iii) a phenolic compound selected from monohydric phenols, dihydric phenols, trihydric phenols, phenols of polynuclear hydrocarbons and phenolic acids, which is miscible with or soluble in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate. The composition may also contain an oxyanion such as a borate which is capable of forming a water soluble complex with the carbohydrate. A mixture of phenolic compounds, such as a mixture consisting predominantly of isomers of di- and trihydroxy diphenyl obtained in the distillation of crude resorcinol, may be used.
(FR)Une composition liante en solution aqueuse utilisable dans la production de moules et noyaux de sable de fonderie est obtenue en melangeant (i) un silicate de metal alcalin, (ii) un hydrate de carbone sensiblement soluble dans l'eau choisi parmi des monosaccharides, des disaccharides, des polysaccharides et leurs derives et (iii) un compose phenolique choisi parmi des phenols monohydriques, des phenols dihydriques, des phenols trihydriques, des phenols d'hydrocarbures polynucleaires et des acides phenoliques, qui est miscible avec ou soluble dans une solution aqueuse d'un silicate de metal alcalin. La composition peut egalement contenir un oxyanion tel qu'un borate capable de former un complexe soluble dans l'eau avec l'hydrate de carbone. Un melange de composes phenoliques, tel qu'un melange consistant essentiellement en isomeres de di- et trihydroxy diphenyle obtenus par distillation de resorcinol, brut peut etre utilise. L'hydrate de carbone prefere est un hydrolysat d'amidon stabilise dont le pouvoir reducteur a ete supprime par un procede tel que l'hydrogenation.
