(EN)A single structural assembly, containing a rotating shaft (27) with means (39, 41, 43) for mechanical agitation of gaseous fluids may be used as a heat exchanger, a flue gas energy recovery device, a gas generator or a combustion device. In practicing the invention, a high rotational stirring velocity for the mechanical agitator increases the convective heat transfer rate, rendering it independent of the lower throughput velocity of primary gaseous fluid. The net primary fluid flow through the assembly device may be controllable independently of the speed of the drive means for the mechanical agitator. Primary fluid residence time in the assembly is utilized to the greatest possible extent by maintaining a mechanical agitator rotary stirring velocity which is large in relation to the net throughput velocity. The primary fluid is separated from a secondary fluid (13) by a thermal transfer surface (12) which is continuously swept by the swirling primary fluid and transfers thermal energy between the two fluids. The thermal transfer surface may be the peripheral wall of the assembly enclosure or a flow tube for the secondary fluid, preferably helically wound, located proximate the peripheral wall.
