(EN)A filtration device (10) for effecting separation of a blood cell-free liquid filtrate from a blood cell-containing liquid suspension in continuous laminar flow therethrough, employing a microporous filtration membrane (32). The filtration flow channels (130) along the surface of the upstream side of the membrane (32) wall are provided with a width across the membrane wall surface which gradually and uniformly increases from the inlet end (22) to the outlet end (24) of the flow channel, whereby the membrane wall shear rate of the suspension in laminar flow through the flow channel (130) will gradually and uniformly vary along the length of the flow channel (130) from a maximum value at its inlet end (22) to a minimum value at its outlet end (24). Such variation in shear rate corresponds with the variation in the transmembrane pressure conditions along the length of the flow channel (130) so as to enable better control of the filtration operating conditions to ensure optimal filtration rates per area of membrane (32) without damage to the blood cells. Useful applications of the device (10) include the separation of plasma from whole blood in a continuous flow plasmapheresis procedure, and the removal of cryoprotective agents from previously frozen, thawed preparations of blood cells.
(FR)Un dispositif de filtration (10) effectue le separation d"un filtrat liquide sans cellules sanguines d"une suspension liquide contenant des cellules sanguines en ecoulement laminaire continu, utilise une membrane de filtration microporeuse (32). Les canaux d"ecoulement de filtration (130) le long de la surface cote amont de la membrane (32) possedent une largeur, qui au travers de la surface de la membrane, s"agrandit graduellement et uniformement de l"entree (22) vers la sortie (24) du canal d"ecoulement, ce qui fait varier graduellement et uniformement le taux de separation de la suspension sur la paroi de la membrane, lors de son ecoulement laminaire a travers le canal d"ecoulement (130), d"une valeur maximum a son entree (22) a une valeur minimum a sa sortie (24). Une telle variation du taux de separation correspond aux conditions de pression trans-membrane sur la longueur du canal d"ecoulement (130) de maniere a permettre une meilleure commande des conditions de fonctionnement de filtration et obtenir des taux de filtration par unite de surface de membrane (32) optima sans endommager les cellules sanguines. Applications utiles du dispositif (10) telles que la separation du plasma du sang par plasmapherese a ecoulement continu, et l"enlevement d"agents cryoprotecteurs de preparations de globules sanguins degelees, anterieurement congelees.
