(EN)The current-carrying capacity of a fluidized-bed electrode is enhanced by imparting increased velocities to the particles (3) suspended therein while maintaining a relatively low degree of bed expansion or voidage. This is accomplished in one embodiment of the invention (Fig. 2) by means of pairs of opposing jets of electrolyte impinging against each other so as to effect a highly turbulent motion of the fluidized particles while the net flow velocity of the supporting electrolyte is kept relatively low. In a second preferred embodiment (Figs 3 and 4), the electrolyte flow velocity may be as high as desired, but its direction preferably horizontal, is reversed at frequent intervals. The suspended particules get thereby intermittently packed against and retained by filters (10, 11) at the alternating outlet walls (6, 7). The alternating packing and expansion result in improved charge and mass transport, and hence in improved electrode performance. The above improvement is especially applicable to fluidized beds of activated carbon particles and of other materials whose specific gravity is not much higher than that of the supporting electrolyte.

Ceci est mis en oeuvre dans une realisation de l"invention (Fig. 2) au moyen de paires de jets d"electrolyte opposes se heurtant l"un contre l"autre en vue d"obtenir un deplacement tres turbulent des particules fluidisees tandis que la vitesse du debit de l"electrolyte de support est maintenue relativement basse. Dans un second mode prefere de realisation (Figs. 3 et 4), la vitesse du debit de l"electrolyte peut etre aussi elevee qu"on le desire, mais son sens, de preference horizontal, est inverse a intervales frequents. Ainsi, par intermittence, les particules suspendues se tassent contre les filtres (10, 11) qui les retiennent, aux parois de sortie alternatives (6, 7). Le tassement et l"expansion par alternance donnent un transfert de charge et de masse ameliore, et par consequent une meilleure performance de l"electrode. La presente amelioration s"applique en particulier aux lits fluidises de particules de charbon actif et d"autres materiaux dont la densite n"est pas beaucoup plus grande que celle de l"electrolyte de support.
