A solid fuel stove 10 has a primary combustion chamber 12 which through a passageway 14 leads to an insulated secondary chamber above ramp 20 where secondary combustion occurs. Secondary air is admitted to passageway 14 and mixes with primary chamber exhaust gases before passing through igniter means 34 in order to lower the temperature at which ignition of the mixture occurs. Further secondary air is admitted to the secondary combustion chamber above the igniter means 34. The primary exhaust gas and secondary air mixture is preheated in heat exchanger 48 using metal barriers 46 in contact with secondary combustion chamber exhaust gases 44 before passing through the igniter means 34.
