La presente invención se refiere a composiciones y métodos para direccionar péptidos, polipéptidos y proteínas a plástidos de células que contienen plástido. En algunas modalidades, la descripción trata de péptidos de tránsito de clorolplasto que pueden dirigir un polipéptido a un plástido y moléculas de ácido nucleico que codifican el mismo. En algunas modalidades, la descripción trata de métodos para producir un material de planta transgénica (por ejemplo, una planta transgénica) que comprende un péptido de tránsito de cloroplasto, así como también materiales de planta producidos por tales métodos y productos mercancía de planta producidos de ahí.
