본 발명은 백금 합금 촉매 PtXY에 관한 것이며, 여기서 X는 니켈, 코발트, 크롬, 구리, 티탄 또는 망간이고, Y가 탄탈륨 또는 니오븀이며, 이 촉매는 합금에서 백금의 원자 비율이 46 내지 75 원자%이고, X의 원자 비율이 1 내지 49 원자%이며, Y의 원자 비율이 1 내지 35 원자%이지만, 단 합금이 66원자%Pt20 원자%Cr14 원자%Ta 또는 50원자%Pt25원자%Co25원자%Ta가 아닌 것을 특징으로 한다. 촉매는 연료 전지, 특히 인산 연료 전지에서 산소 환원 촉매로서의 특정한 용도를 갖는다.
