PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions and methods for targeting peptides, polypeptides and proteins to plastids of plastid-containing cells.

SOLUTION: Disclosed herein is an isolated nucleic acid molecule comprising a polynucleotide operably linked to a promoter, where the polynucleotide comprises a nucleotide sequence encoding a chloroplast transit peptide (CTP) of a specific amino acid sequence and a nucleotide sequence encoding a polypeptide of interest to encode a chimeric protein, and the polynucleotide encodes the CTP and a 3-enolpyruvylshikimate-5-phosphate synthetase (EPSPS). Also disclosed is a transgenic plant material comprising the nucleic acid molecule.
