受信機において時間と共に単調に変動する位相及び振幅以外の1つ又は複数の特性を有する波のスペクトル成分であって、波源から受信機まで移動した時間又は距離に比例して変動の遅れ又は遅延を提供する波のスペクトル成分。遅延は、波源からの出発に先立つ特性値を示し、その近傍には、存在しない。変調された情報に対する遅延の直交性により、遅延は、信号の波源距離毎の信号の測距や分離又は隔離に有用になる。周波数及び波長の遅延は、物理チャネルの容量の逓倍を可能にする。波源から受信機への全体の経路に沿う遅延波長の定常性により、照射と異なる波長での撮像と同様に、波源波長では使用不能なチャネル又は媒体を介した受信が可能になる。
