PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ternary platinum alloy catalyst exhibiting improved lifetime stability without reduction in activity.

SOLUTION: The invention provides a ternary platinum alloy catalyst PtXY suitably used in electrodes of fuel cells, where X is nickel, cobalt, chromium, copper, titanium or manganese, and Y is tantalum or niobium. In the alloy, the atomic percentage of platinum is 46-74 atom%, the atomic percentage of X is 25-40 atom% and the atomic percentage of Y is 1-20 atom%. The catalyst has particular use as an oxygen reduction catalyst in fuel cells, and in particular in phosphoric acid fuel cells.

【課題】活性の低下がなく、改善された寿命安定性を示す、三元白金合金触媒の提供。
【解決手段】燃料電池の電極において好適に使用される三元白金合金触媒PtXYであって、Xが、ニッケル、コバルト、クロム、銅、チタニウム、又はマンガンであり、Yが、タンタル又はニオブであり、前記合金において、白金の原子百分率が46〜74at%であり、Xの原子百分率が25〜40at%、及びYの原子百分率が1〜20at%である、三元白金合金触媒。この触媒は、燃料電池、とりわけ、リン酸燃料電池において、酸素還元触媒として、特に使用される。
