高密度光ディスクならびにその記録および/または再生装置などの高密度記録媒体が開示される。ブルーレイディスクのような高密度光ディスクが光ディスク装置に備えられたターンテーブルに不適切に配置されたとき、例えば、高密度光ディスクがターンテーブルに上下逆さに配置されたときに、光ピックアップの対物レンズが最大稼動距離に移動するまで高密度光ディスクの記録層に向かって上の方へ動かされるが、高密度光ディスクが光ディスク装置に備えられた光ピックアップの対物レンズと衝突しないように、高密度光ディスクのクランピング領域と情報領域の間に割り当てられた高密度光ディスクのトランジション領域に所定傾斜を有する段差が形成される。情報領域の厚さは、トランジッション領域における段差の提供によってクランピング領域のそれより小さい。結果として、対物レンズの高密度光ディスクとの衝突による高密度光ディスクまたは対物レンズへの損傷が防止され、サーボ動作の致命的なエラーが効果的に防止される。さらに、高密度光ディスクを製造するのに要求される材料の費用が低減され、安定したクランプ力が維持される。また、高密度光ディスクのスロットタイプの光ディスクドライブへの安全な挿入が可能となる。
