相変化ディスク、即ち相変化材料を具える光ディスクに2次元データパターンを書き込む光記録方法を開示する。熱クロスイレーズ効果を、回折限界レーザスポットの側部を用いて隣接トラックを照射することによって先に書き込まれたデータを部分的に消去するように利用する。この消去量を書込みストラテジによって精密に制御し、レーザスポットに面するマークの側部を消去して最終マークサイズを決定する。マークは最初に所望のサイズより大きいマークサイズを生ずるレーザスポットで書き込み、その後、このマークを、隣接トラックにマークを書き込む際に、隣接トラックにフォーカスされた回折限界レーザビームの側部で照射してこのマークの側部を消去することによってそのサイズを減少させることができる。
