(EN) Communication between a sender and recipient via an intermediary using time locked smart contracts – one on an open public blockchain, and one on a private blockchain – to transfer a token between the two blockchains. To transfer a private token from the private blockchain to the public blockchain, the sender uses the private smart contract to record the result of a cryptographic operation on a secret, such as hashing the secret, and information about the private token 320. The intermediary accesses the recorded result and information 340 and arranges the public smart contract to create a public token associated with the recipient and to record the secret on the public blockchain if the public smart contract receives the secret before a defined time 350. The private smart contract transfers ownership of the private token from the sender to the intermediary and records transaction verification data on the private blockchain if the secret is received by a later defined time 330. The intermediary accesses the secret on the public blockchain and provides this secret to the private smart contract 363, then accesses the resulting transaction verification data on the private blockchain and records this on the public blockchain 365.
