Abstract:
(EN) A tape rule or other displacement measuring apparatus comprises a reader (30) and a member (1) that are relatively movable. The member (1) carries two position tracks (3, 4) each defined by a sequence of markings made in succession along the member. The two tapes (3, 4) record different values in a pseudo-random sequence which is the result of repetitive operations on a seed consisting of a small number of elements. The sequence has the property that a group of successive values of length at least equal to that of the seed occurs at a single position in the sequence so that a succession of markings read from the tracks representing values of length at least equal to the seed defines an absolute position of the member (1). The reader (30) has four sensors, two arranged to respond to each track (3, 4), with the pattern of the markings and locations of the sensors arranged so that only a single sensor changes state each time that the member (1) moves through an interval of displacement relatively to the sensors. The states occur consecutively along the member (1) and are recognisable by decoding logic fed with successive states as a logical value corresponding to one of the values depending on which sequence has been followed.
