(EN) The method involves detecting contours in an image acquired by a video camera and detecting horizontal and vertical segments based on size and a slope of the detected contours, using an image processing device. The detected segments are regrouped into parallelograms i.e. rectangles, and a vertical target object i.e. rectangular shaped American signaling panel, is detected from the parallelograms, using a control unit. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a vertical target object detecting device comprising an image processing device (2) a computer program product comprising instructions to perform a method for detecting a vertical target object.
