Claims

1. A suspension system (10) for suspending a plurality of devices from a support structure comprising a ceiling plate (30) configured for attachment to the support structure (16), a first spindle (40), carried by the ceiling plate, the first spindle configured for supporting at least a first device (12) thereon, characterized by:

an adapter plate (62) configured for mounting to the ceiling plate;

a second spindle (60) carried by the adapter plate, the second spindle configured for supporting at least a second device (14, 14') thereon.


  2. The suspension system of claim 1, further characterized by:

the first spindle not being carried by the adapter plate.


  3. The suspension system of either one of preceding claims 1 and 2, further characterized by:

the adapter plate and ceiling plate being configured for attachment of the adapter plate to the ceiling plate in a selected one of a plurality of arcuately spaced positions (Figures 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d).


  4. The suspension system of any one of preceding claims 1-3, further characterized by:

the adapter plate defining a hollow portion (70) which is shaped to receive the first spindle therethrough.


  5. The suspension system of any one of preceding claims 1-4, further characterized by:

the hollow portion defining an inner arcuate surface (72) of less than about 180° of an imaginary circle inscribing the inner arcuate surface.


  6. The suspension system of any one of preceding claims 1-5, further characterized by:

the adapter plate defining a sector of a circle having an inner arcuate surface (72) and an outer arcuate surface (64), the outer arcuate surface being radially outward of the inner arcuate surface.


  7. The suspension system of claim 6, further characterized by:

the outer arcuate surface defining at least about 180° of an imaginary circle C inscribing the outer arcuate surface.


  8. The suspension system of either one of preceding claims 6 and 7, further characterized by:

the outer arcuate surface defining less than about 270° of an imaginary circle C inscribing the outer arcuate surface.


  9. The system of any one of preceding claims 1-8, further characterized by:

at least one of the first and second devices being selected from the group consisting of video monitors, lightheads, vital sign monitors, and combinations thereof.


  10. The system of any one of preceding claims 1-9, further characterized by:

a first adjustable arm assembly (50) mounted to the first spindle and rotatable relative thereto, which carries the first device; and

a second adjustable arm assembly (98) mounted to the second spindle and rotatable relative thereto, which carries the second device.


  11. The system of claim 10, further characterized by:

the second adjustable arm assembly being mounted to the spindle by a hub (100), at least a portion (101) of the hub being rotatable relative to the spindle.


  12. The system of either one of preceding claims 10 and 11, further including a telescoping transition piece (120) mounted intermediate the second adjustable arm assembly and the second spindle.
  13. The system of any one of preceding claims 1-12, further characterized by:

the adapter plate including a generally cylindrical collar (90) and the spindle being mounted to the collar.


  14. The system of any one of preceding claims 1-13, further characterized by:

the second spindle being generally parallel with the first spindle and radially spaced from the first spindle.


  15. An auxiliary assembly (130) characterized by:

an adapter plate (62) configured for selective attachment to a ceiling plate (30), the ceiling plate supporting a device (12) for use in a surgical procedure, the adapter plate including an inner surface (72) which defines a hollow (70) shaped to receive a spindle (40) of the ceiling plate therethrough;

an adjustable arm assembly (98) operably connected with the adapter plate;

a device (14, 14') mounted to the adjustable arm, such that when the adapter plate is attached to the ceiling plate, the device is suspended therefrom.


  16. The auxiliary assembly of claim 15, further characterized by:

the device including at least one of a lighthead and a video monitor.


  17. The auxiliary assembly of either one of claims 15 and 16, further characterized by:

a generally cylindrical spindle (60) mounted at a first end to the adapter plate, the adjustable arm assembly being connected to a second end of the spindle and rotatable relative thereto.


  18. A method of suspending a plurality of devices (12, 14, 14') from a support structure, the method including suspending a first (12) of the devices from a ceiling plate (30) mounted to the support structure, the method characterized by:

mounting an adapter plate (62) to the ceiling plate; and

suspending a second (14, 14) of the devices from the adapter plate.


  19. The method of claim 18, characterized by:

the step of suspending the second device including:

rotatably mounting an articulated arm (98) to a spindle (60), the spindle being mounted to the adapter plate.


  20. The method of either one of claims 18 and 19, further characterized by:

the ceiling plate including a plurality of holes (84) and the adapter plate including a plurality of holes (82) and the step of mounting an adapter plate to the ceiling plate includes:

passing securement members (80) through at least some of the plurality of holes in the ceiling plate and at least some of the holes in the adapter plate.


  21. In a suspension system including a ceiling plate (30) which is anchored to an underlying building structure (16), the ceiling plate having a centrally mounted spindle (60) configured for supporting a first device (12), characterized in that the system furthermore includes an adapter assembly comprising:

an adapter plate (62) configured to overlay a portion of the ceiling plate and partially circumscribe the central spindle, the adapter plate having at least another spindle (60) mounted thereto; and

fasteners (80) to connect the adapter plate to the ceiling plate with the central spindle and the another spindle adjacent to each other.
