Claims

1. A process for producing a reaction product useful as a viscosity improver and dispersant additive for lubricating oil compositions comprising:
   grafting an oil soluble ethylene copolymer comprising from 15 to 90 wt% ethylene and from 10 to 85 wt% of one or more C₃₋₂₈ alpha-olefins, and having a number average molecular weight of 15,000 to 500,000 with ethylenically unsaturated C₄₋₁₀ mono- or dicarboxylic acid or anhydride wherein the carboxylic acid or anhydride groups are located on vicinal carbon atoms, to produce a grafted copolymer (a);
   reacting the grafted copolymer (a) with
(b) an amine having at least two primary amine groups or having at least one primary amine group and at least one secondary amine group, and
(c) an acid component selected from

(i) a C₁₂₋₄₉ hydrocarbyl substituted succinic anhydride or acid;

(ii) a C₂₅₋₄₀₀ hydrocarbyl substituted succinic anhydride or acid; and

(iii) a C₂₅₋₄₀₀ hydrocarbyl substituted monocarboxylic acid; and

(d) a lactone;
wherein (a), (b) and (c) are first reacted and then (d) is reacted.
  2. A process according to claim 1 wherein (a), (b) and (c) are reacted simultaneously with removal of water, and (d) is reacted subsequently.
  3. A process according to claim 1 wherein (a) and (b) are first reacted, followed by reaction with (c) and then (d).
  4. A process according to any of claims 1 to 3 wherein said ethylene copolymer consists essentially of a copolymer containing from 30 to 80 wt.% ethylene and 20 to 70 wt.% propylene and a number average molecular weight from 15,000 to 200,000.
  5. A process according to claim 4 wherein said C₄₋₁₀ acid or anhydride consists essentially of maleic anhydride and wherein from 1 to 2 molar proportions of (b) and from 1 to 4 molar proportions of (c) are used per molar proportion of maleic anhydride.
  6. A process according to any of claims 1 to 5 wherein (c) is hydrocarbyl substituted succinic acid or anhydride and wherein said hydrocarbyl substituent is an alkenyl or alkyl group derived from a polymer of C₂₋₅ monoolefin.
  7. A process according to any of claims 1 to 6 wherein (d) comprises a polymerisable lactone having from 6 to 10 atoms in the lactone ring.
  8. A process according to any of claims 1 to 6 wherein (d) comprises E-caprolactone.
  9. A process according to any of claims 1 to 6 wherein (d) gamma-butyrolactone.
  10. A process according to any of claims 1 to 6 wherein said reaction product corresponds to the formula:

where R is ethylene-propylene copolymer, R' is polyisobutylene, alkylene is C₂₋₇, x is 1 to 10, y is 1 to 7 and m has an average value from 0.2 to 100.
  11. A process according to claim 10 wherein m has an average value from 0.5 to 20.
  12. A process according to any preceding claim wherein (b) is a polyamine of the general formula



        H₂N-[-alkylene-NH-) x-H



where x is 1 to 10 and alkylene is ethylene or propylene.
  13. A process according to any preceding claim wherein (c) is C₂₅₋₄₀₀ polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride.
  14. A process according to any preceding claim wherein said grafting step is conducted in a lubricating mineral oil solution.
  15. A process according to any preceding claim wherein said grafting step is conducted at a temperature from 150 to 200°C using a free radical initiator.
  16. A viscosity index improving additive having improved dispersant properties obtainable by the process according to any preceding claim.
  17. A lubricating composition comprising a viscosity index improving additive according to claim 16.
  18. A lubricating composition according to claim 17 wherein said additive is present in an amount from 0.1 to 10 wt.%.
  19. A lubricating composition according to claim 17 wherein said additive is present in an amount from 0.5 to 5 wt.%.
  20. An oil concentrate comprising a viscosity index improving additive according to claim 16.
  21. Art oil concentrate wherein said additive is present in an amount from 10 to 50 wt.%.
  22. Art oil concentrate wherein said additive is present in an amount from 10 to 30 wt.%.
