The present invention relates to a tellurium-free mixed oxide catalyst comprising the elements (i) molybdenum (Mo), (ii) vanadium (V), (iii) at least one of niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta) and tungsten (W) as well as (iv) phosphorous (P), and its use in the oxidation of hydrocarbons. Catalysts of this type show a surprisingly high selectivity in the oxidation of propane to acrylic acid.
