(EN) The invention provides a photoelectric conversion element and a photoelectrochemical cell that exhibit high IPCE in a long-wavelength region, achieve good photoelectric conversion efficiency, and moreover excel in durability, as well as dyes for use therein. The photoelectric conversion element comprises a layer structure. The layer structure comprises, on a conductive substrate, a photoreceptor which has a layer of a fine particulate semiconductor which has adsorbed dye, a charge-transfer body, and a counter electrode. The photoelectric conversion element is characterized in that: at least one of the dyes has a structure represented by formula (1), wherein Q represents an aromatic ring, X1 and X2 represent sulfur atoms, selenium atoms, oxygen atoms, or CR1R2, R1 and R2 represent alkyl groups, R and R' are alkyl groups or aromatic groups, P1 represents a specific group of atoms, P2 represents a group of atoms necessary to form a polymethine dye, the P1 and the P2 are different, and the W1 represents a counter ion when necessary to neutralize charge.
