A microparticle detection element comprises: a housing (12) having a gas flow path (13) through which a gas passes; an electrical charge generation unit (20) that imparts an electrical charge to microparticles in the gas introduced into the housing (12) and forms charged microparticles, the electrical charge being generated by discharge; a trapping electrode (42) provided so as to be exposed to the gas flow path (13) within the housing (12), the trapping electrode (42) trapping an object to be trapped, which is either the charged microparticles or an electrical charge not imparted to the microparticles; and a plurality of exposed electrodes that include the trapping electrode (42) and are exposed within the gas flow path. In the housing (12), a short-circuit restriction structure (75) thatincludes a recess and/or a protrusion is provided to a connection surface, which is a portion of the inner peripheral surface exposed to the gas flow path (13) at which at least two of the pluralityof exposed electrodes are connected.
