The invention discloses a large-scale tanker. The tanker includes a tanker body, the tanker body is internally provided with a cargo oil tank, and a top ballast tank is arranged between the cargo oil tank and a main deck of the tanker body. By using the top ballast tank to separate the cargo oil tank of the tanker from the main deck, when the cargo oil tank stays at a full oil state, the interior of the top ballast tank is also fully injected with ballast water, and the ballast water is utilized for cutting off connection between the main deck and the cargo oil tank; without adopting anti-hazard classification equipment for the equipment on the main deck, the safety standard can be satisfied, and therefore the manufacturing cost of the tanker is decreased, and the safety is improved. The invention further discloses a safety protection method of the large-scale tanker, and according to the method, the interior of the cargo oil tank is fully injected with crude oil, and the interior of the top ballast tank between the cargo oil tank and the main deck is fully injected with the ballast water.
