Provided is a method for producing a surface-treated steel sheet (1) for battery containers, wherein a dull or semi-glossy nickel plating layer (12) is formed on at least a surface of a steel sheet (11), said surface forming the outer surface of a battery container. In this method for producing a surface-treated steel sheet (1) for battery containers, the nickel plating layer (12) is formed by performing a plating process at a bath temperature of 70 DEG C or more.
