Provided are a residual stress estimation method and a residual stress estimation device, whereby the number of collected cut-off pieces for measuring inherent strain can be suppressed without reducing the accuracy of residual stress estimation. When inherent strain is assumed to be uniformly distributed in one direction in a structure, the user measures residual stress from cut-off pieces collected within an area in which inherent strain is uniformly distributed and enters the measurement value into the residual stress estimation device. The residual stress estimation device uses the given measurement value for residual stress, estimates a two-dimensional distribution for inherent strain in an analysis surface orthogonal to the one direction in the structure, transfers the estimated two-dimensional distribution for inherent strain to the one direction, and estimates a three-dimensional distribution for inherent strain in the structure.
