CLAIMS:
1. A filter for inhibiting the flow of inclusions in a molten metal passing through the filter
thereby to enable characterisation of the molten metal, comprising a first surface which operably contacts the molten metal and has an active region which operably allows flow of molten metal through the filter, and a second surface having an active region through which molten metal leaves the filter and wherein the active regions of both the first and second surfaces are unfinished and are defined by masks, inhibiting fluid flow between said surfaces.
2. A filter according to claim 1 wherein the active region(s) is (are) underground.
3. A filter according to any one of claims 1 and 2 wherein the mask on the first surface comprises a film impermeable to the molten metal.
4. A filter according to claim 3 wherein the film comprises platelet material.
5. A filter according to claim 4 wherein the platelet material is mica or kaolin.
6. A filter according to any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the active region of the second surface is defined by a mask comprising a film or fluid impermeable material.
7. A filter according to claim 6 wherein the impermeable material is refractory cement or glue.
8. A filter according to claim 7 wherein the refractory cement or glue is Flaxbond™.
9. A filter according to any one of claims 1 to 8 comprising sintered granules.
10. A filter according to claim 9 wherein the sintered granules are alumina, zirconia, metal or sintered metal.
11. A filter according to any one of claims 1 to 8 comprising a granule bonding agent.
12. A filter according to claim 11 wherein the granule bonding agent is silica.
13. A filter according to any one of claims 1 to 12 wherein the average pore size is in the region of 50 to 200 (microns).
14. A filter according to claim 13 wherein the average pore size is 90 (microns).
