Abstract

La presente proporciona un método para impartir tolerancia a un aminoácido análogo al triptofano en células de plantas, por medio de introducir y expresar un segmento aislado de ADN que codifica una antranilato sintetasa en las células de la planta. Se proveen asimismo plantas transgénicas transformadas con un segmento de ADN aislado que codifica una antranilato sintetasa, así como semillas y progenie derivada de esas plantas. La presente proporciona asimismo una secuencia de ADNc de una subunidad alfa y una subunidad beta de una antranilato sintetasa de maíz. Reivindicación 1: Una planta transformada, caracterizada porque ha sido regenerada a partir de las células de planta transformadas obtenidas mediante el método de impartir tolerancia frente a un aminoácido análogo del triptofano a una célula de planta de maíz que comprende los pasos de: a) introducir un casete de expresión que comprende un primer segmento de ADN que codifica una antranilato sintasa exógena ligada operablemente a un promotor distinto de un promotor antranilato sintasa nativa, funcional en una célula de planta de maíz, en células de una planta susceptible, a efectos de producir células de planta transformadas, en donde la antranilato sintasa es sustancialmente resistente a la inhibición por L-triptofano libre o por un aminoácido análogo del triptofano; y b) expresar la antranilato sintasa codificada por el primer segmento de ADN en las células de planta de modo tal de producir una cantidad de dicha antranilato sintasa efectiva para lograr que las células de planta transformadas sean sustancialmente tolerantes a una cantidad de L-triptofano libre o de un aminoácido análogo del triptofano que inhibe el crecimiento de la células no transformadas de la planta susceptible.
