Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment agent for obtaining a liquid crystal display element superior in low residual image characteristics having a high voltage holding rate under a high-temperature environment.

SOLUTION: In a liquid crystal display element 10, one substrate surface of one of a pair of substrates 11a and 11b is provided with a first alignment film 13 for aligning liquid crystal molecules tilting with respect to a direction perpendicular to the substrate surface, and the other substrate surface is provided with a second alignment film 15 for aligning the liquid crystal molecules vertically. In particular, the first alignment film 13 is formed using a liquid crystal alignment agent containing a radiation-sensitive compound having an optical alignment group. The optical alignment group has a structure based on at least one compound selected from azobenzene, stilbene, α-imino-β-keto ester, spiropyran, spirooxazine, cinnamic acid, chalcone, stilbazole, benzylidene phthalimidine, coumarin, diphenylacerylene, and anthracene.

【課題】高温環境下で高い電圧保持率を示すとともに、低残像特性に優れた液晶表示素子を得るための液晶配向剤を提供する。
【解決手段】液晶表示素子10は、一対の基板11a,11bのうちの一方の基板表面において、該基板表面に垂直な方向に対して液晶分子を傾斜して配向させる第1配向膜13が形成され、他方の基板表面に、液晶分子を垂直配向させる第2配向膜15が形成されている。特に、第1配向膜13は、光配向性基を有する感放射線性化合物を含む液晶配向剤を用いて形成されており、該光配向性基が、アゾベンゼン、スチルベン、α−イミノ−β−ケトエステル、スピロピラン、スピロオキサジン、桂皮酸、カルコン、スチルバゾール、ベンジリデンフタルイミジン、クマリン、ジフェニルアセリレン及びアントラセンからなる群より選ばれる少なくとも1つの化合物由来の構造を有している。
