CLAIMS

1. A method for producing a biaxially oriented,
thermoplastic, unitary, open-ended, container- shaped article having transparent sidewalls and a translucent rim comprising:
forming a biaxially oriented container- shaped intermediate having a crystallizable rim portion; and
simultaneously heat setting said rim
portion and heat-shrinking said intermediate.

2. A method for producing a biaxially oriented,
thermoplastic, unitary open-ended, container- shaped article having transparent sidewalls and a translucent rim comprising:
forming a biaxially oriented intermediate having a crystallizable rim portion at a first station; and
heat-setting said rim and heat-shrinking
said intermediate at a second station.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said intermediate formation comprises blow molding a sheet of
thermoplastic material substantially at its
orientation temperature.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein said intermediate formation comprises blow molding a sheet of
thermoplastic material substantially at its
orientation temperature.

5. A method for heat shrinking a biaxially
oriented container-shaped article of
thermoplastic crystallizable polymer, said
article having a crystallizable rim,
comprising: placing said article on a male form having a predetermined size, shape and texture;
heating said rim to crystallize it,
thereby making said rim heat stable; and
heating said article above the orientation temperature of said polymer to heat-shrink said article onto the surface of said form to give
said article a final shape, wherein said rim
crystallization and heat shrinking occur
simultaneously.

6. A method for heat shrinking a biaxially
oriented container-shaped article of
thermoplastic crystallizable polymer to form a container-shaped article having transaparent
sidewalls and a translucent rim, wherein the
transparent sidewalls are free from translucent areas, comprising:
placing said intermediate on a male form
having a predetermined size, shape and texture;
heating said rim and said sidewalls
simultaneously; and
providing means for preventing said rim
from pulling into said sidewalls.

7. An apparatus for producing a biaxially
oriented, transparent, thermoplastic, unitary,
open-ended, container-shaped article having a
contiguous heat set rim comprising:
intermediate forming means for forming a
thermoplastic intermediate having a
crystallizable rim; and
rim heat setting and heat shrinking means
for simultaneously raising the temperature of
said crystallizable rim to heat set and
crystallize said rim and heating said
intermediate above the orientation temperature of said thermoplastic to heat-shrink the
intermediate onto the exterior surface of the
male form.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said
intermediate forming means is comprised of blow forming means for blowing a sheet of
thermoplastic material that is maintained at or near its orientation temperature.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said heat
setting and heat shrinking means is comprised
of:
a heated male form; and means for forcing air out of said male form.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said rim heat setting and heat shrinking means is comprised
of: means for preventing said crystallizable
rim from pulling into the sidewalls of said
container-shaped article.

11. An apparatus for heat stabilizing a biaxially
oriented, transparent, container-shaped article of thermoplastic crystallizable polymer, said
article having a crystallizable rim comprising:
rim heat setting and heat shrinking means for simultaneously raising the temperature of
said crystallizable rim to heat set and
crystallize said rim and heating said article
above the orientation temperature of said
thermoplastic to heat shrink the intermediate
onto the exterior surface of a male form.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said heat
setting and heat shrinking means is comprised
of: a heated male form; and means for forcing air out of said male form.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said heat
setting and heat shrinking means is comprised of: means for preventing said crystallizable rim from pulling into the sidewalls of said
container-shaped article.

14. A thermoplastic, container-shaped article
having a depth of draw of less than about 1.0
comprised of:
a transparent, biaxially oriented bottom;
side walls comprised of a transparent,
biaxially oriented portion adjacent said
bottom, and a non-oriented crystallized portion adjacent the mouth of said article; and
a non-oriented crystallized contiguous rim adjacent said mouth of said article.

15. A polyester, container-shaped article comprised of transparent, heat set, biaxially oriented
side walls and a bottom, wherein the depth of
draw of said article is less than about 1.0.

16. The article of claim 15 further comprising a
crystallized rim portion adjacent the mouth of said article.

17. A method for producing biaxially oriented,
thermoplastic, container-shaped articles having a depth of draw of less that about 1.0
comprised of:
forming a biaxially oriented intermediate
by blow forming a sheet of thermoplastic
material that is maintained at or near its
orientation temperature into a forming tube to
form an intermediate, wherein said forming tube contains means for uniformly preventing a
portion a said forming intermediate from
becoming biaxially oriented;
placing said intermediate on a male form
of a predetermined size, shape and texture;
heating said intermediate above the
orientation temperature of said thermoplastic
material to heat-shrink said intermediate onto the surface of said form to create said
article; and
removing said article from said form.

18. A method for producing transparent, biaxially
oriented, thermoplastic, container-shaped
articles comprised of:
forming a thermoplastic intermediate
comprised of biaxially oriented side walls and bottom;
placing said intermediate on a heated male form of a predetermined size, shape and
texture;
heating said intermediate above the
orientation temperature of said thermoplastic
material with heated air exiting said male form to heat shrink said intermediate onto the
surface of said form to create said article,
wherein said article has 75% or less of the
volume of said intermediate; and
removing said article from said form.

19. A method for producing transparent, biaxially
oriented, thermoplastic, container-shaped
articles from a biaxially oriented container
shaped intermediate comprised of:
placing said intermediate on a heated male form of a predetermined size, shape and
texture;

heating said intermediate above the
orientation temperature of said thermoplastic
material with heated air exiting said male form to heat shrink said intermediate onto the
surface of said form to create said article;
and
removing said article from said form.

20. An apparatus for producing a biaxially
oriented, thermoplastic, unitary, open-ended,
container-shaped article having a depth of draw of less than about 1.0 comprising:
blow forming means for blowing a sheet of thermoplastic material that is maintained at or near its orientation temperature to form a
partially biaxially oriented intermediate,
including means for uniformly preventing a
portion of said forming intermediate from
becoming biaxially oriented; and
heating means for heat shrinking said
intermediate above the orientation temperature
of said material onto the exterior of a male
form.

21. An apparatus for producing a biaxially
oriented, transparent, thermoplastic, unitary,
open-ended, container-shaped article having a
depth of draw of less than about 1.0 from a
biaxially oriented container-shaped
intermediate, comprised of a heated male form,
and wherein heated air can be forced out of
said heated male form.

22. A method for producing a transparent, biaxially oriented, thermoplastic, container-shaped
article from a sheet of thermoplastic material
comprising: forming a biaxially oriented intermediate by blow forming said sheet maintained at or
near its orientation temperature;
placing said intermediate on a heated male form of a predetermined size, shape and
texture;
heating said intermediate above the
orientation temperature of said thermoplastic
material with heated air exiting said male form to shrink said intermediate onto the surface of said form to create said article; and
removing said article from said form.

23. The article formed according to the method of
claim 17.
