We Claim:

1) A tamping assembly for a capsule filling machine, said tamping assembly (1) comprising: a plurality of tamping pistons (5) arranged in at least one set of tamping pistons, said at least one set having one or more of said plurality of tamping pistons (5);

at least one servo motor (10) operatively coupled with said at least one set of tamping pistons, said at least one servo motor (10) being configured to actuate each of said one or more of said plurality of tamping pistons (5), wherein the actuation by the at least one servo motor (10) linearly displaces the one or more of said plurality of tamping pistons (5) of the respective at least one set of tamping pistons.

2) The tamping assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein said tamping assembly (1) comprises:

at least one tamping piston holder (35) detachably attached to said at least one set of tamping pistons;

at least one ball screw (25) coupled at a first end thereof to a shaft of said at least one servo motor, and further coupled at a second end thereof to the at least one tamping piston holder (35);

wherein operation of the at least one servo motor (10) rotates the shaft thereof about its axis to linearly displace the at least one ball screw (25) coupled thereto, causing linear displacement of the at least one tamping piston holder (35) coupled to the at least one ball screw (25), thereby linearly displacing each tamping piston (5) of the at least one set of tamping pistons attached to the at least one tamping piston holder (35).

3) The tamping assembly as claimed in claim 2, wherein said tamping assembly (1) comprises:

a tamping head holding plate (15), the at least one servo motor (10) being securely mounted on said tamping head holding plate (15) and the at least one ball screw (25) having the first end thereof passing through the tamping head holding plate (15) to be coupled the shaft of the at least one servo motor (10);

two guide rods (35a, 35b), one on either side of the at least one ball screw (25), passing through the tamping head holding plate (15) and attached to the at least one tamping piston holder (35) to prevent wobbling during linear displacement thereof.

4) The tamping assembly as claimed in claim 2, wherein said tamping assembly (1) comprises:

a rotary dosing disc (50);

a tub (45) containing a pharmaceutical ingredient (45a) positioned above said dosing disc (50);

a support plate (55) positioned immediately below said dosing disc (50) and abutting to a bottom surface of said dosing disc (50); and

a cover plate (40) covering said tub (45), said cover plate (40) comprising a plurality of through-holes each having a tamping piston (5) passing there through into the pharmaceutical ingredient (45a) in said tub (45).

5) The tamping assembly as claimed in claim 4, wherein said dosing disc (50) comprises a plurality of elongated holes therein equivalent to the plurality of tamping pistons (5), the holes being arranged in at least one set corresponding to the at least one set of tamping pistons.

6) The tamping assembly as claimed in claim 4, wherein the tamping assembly (1) comprises an indexing motor (65) having a shaft (70) thereof coupled to said dosing disc (50) to rotate said dosing disc (50) in a step-wise manner to align the at least one set of holes of said dosing disc (50) below the at least one set of tamping pistons (5),

wherein the linear displacement of the tamping pistons (5) progressively compresses the pharmaceutical ingredient (45a) in the holes of said dosing disc (50) as said dosing disc (50) rotates.

7) The tamping assembly as claimed in claim 3, wherein the tamping assembly (1) comprises:

a base plate (100);

at least two side pillars (75a, 75b) mounted on said base plate (100), each side pillar having a lifting rod (80a, 80b) passing there through, said tamping head holding plate (15) mounted on said side pillars (75a, 75b) and coupled to said lifting rods (80a, 80b);

a ball screw (85a, 85b) coupled to each lifting rod (80a, 80b) in each side pillar (75a, 75b), and passing through said base plate (100);

at least two driven pulleys (95a, 95b), each ball screw (85a, 85b) further rotatably coupled to a driven pulley (95a, 95b);

at least two driving pulleys (105a, 105b) each operatively coupled to each of said at least two driven pulleys (95a, 95b), and each driving pulley mounted to a motor (110a, 110b), wherein the operation of each motor (110a, 110b) generates rotational motion in said driving pulley (105a, 105b) and said driven (95a, 95b) pulley, to vertically displace each ball screw (85a, 85b) and thereby push each lifting rod (80a, 80b) in each side pillar (75a, 75b) upwards to lift said tamping head holding plate (15).

8) The tamping assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the at least one servo motor (10) is connected to a control system adapted to control the operation of the servo motor.

9) The control system as claimed in claim 8, wherein said control system is adapted to measure weight of at least one capsule filled with a pharmaceutical ingredient (45a), and in response to the measured weight, further adapted to operate at least one servo motor (10) to linearly displace the one or more of said plurality of tamping pistons (5) of the respective set of tamping pistons operatively coupled to said at least one servo motor (10), to ensure that each filled capsule is of a pre-determined weight.
