CLAIMS

1. Container (10; 110) for collection and preservation of biopsy samples, comprising a cup-shaped lower body (12; 112) open at its top,

a cup- shaped upper body (14; 112) open at its bottom, and

an intermediate body (16; 116) interposed between the lower body (12; 112) and the upper body (14; 112),

wherein the lower body (12; 112) is detachably connected to the intermediate body (16; 116) to enclose with the intermediate body (16; 116) a lower chamber (18; 118) intended to receive the biopsy sample to be preserved,

wherein the upper body (14; 114) is connected to the intermediate body (16; 116) and encloses with the intermediate body (16; 116) an upper chamber (20; 120) containing a given amount of preserving solution,

wherein the intermediate body (16; 116) includes at least one transverse wall (16b; 116b', 116b") which separates the lower chamber (18; 118) from the upper chamber (20; 120) and has at least one first through hole (22; 122', 122") through which the lower chamber (18; 118) is able to be put in fluid communication with the upper chamber (20; 120), wherein the container (10; 110) further comprises flow control means (26, 30, 32; 126, 127, 129) carried by the intermediate body (16; 116) to control the flow through said at least one first through hole (22; 122', 122"), said flow control means (26, 30, 32; 126, 127, 129) being displaceable with respect to the intermediate body (16; 116) between a first position, in which they sealingly close said at least one first through hole (22; 122', 122"), thereby preventing the preserving solution from flowing from the upper chamber (20; 120) to the lower chamber (18; 118), and a second position, in which they open said at least one first through hole (22; 122', 122"), thereby allowing the preserving solution to flow from the upper chamber (20; 120) to the lower chamber (18; 118), and

wherein the container (10; 110) further comprises manually-operated control means (28a, 28b; 128) which are associated with said flow control means (26, 30, 32; 126, 127, 129) to allow an operator to control the displacement of said flow control means (26, 30, 32; 126, 127, 129) between said first and second positions, and project laterally from the intermediate body (16; 116).

Container according to claim 1, wherein said flow control means (26, 30, 32; 126, 127, 129) comprise a member (26; 126) received in a second through hole (24; 124 ) extending in the intermediate body (16; 116) through said at least one first through hole (22; 122', 122"), said member (26; 126) being movable in said second through hole (24; 124) between said first and second positions.

3. Container according to claim 2, wherein said manually-operated control means (28a, 28b, 128) are rigidly connected to said member (26; 126).

4. Container according to claim 3, wherein said manually-operated control means (28a, 28b, 128) are formed in one piece with said member (26; 126).

5. Container according to any one of claims 2 to 4, wherein said member (26; 126) is a plunger-like member (26) slidably mounted in the second through hole (24) between said first and second positions.

Container according to claim 5, wherein said plunger-like member (26) includes a first intermediate portion (30) which is configured to sealingly close said at least one first through hole (22) and a second intermediate portion (32) which is arranged adjacent to the first intermediate portion (30) and is configured to allow the fluid to flow through said at least one first through hole (22).

Container according to claim 6, wherein said manually-operated control means (28a, 28b; 128) are formed by a first end portion (28a) and a second end portion (28b) of said plunger-like member (26), wherein said first and second intermediate portions (30, 32) extend between said first and second end portions (28a, 28b), and wherein said first and second end portions (28a, 28b) alternatively project outwards from the intermediate body (16) when said plunger- like member (26) is placed in said second position and in said first position, respectively.

8. Container according to any one of claims 2 to 4, wherein said member (26; 126) is a rotary member (126) rotatably mounted in the second through hole (124) for rotation be- tween said first and second positions.

Container according to claim 8, wherein said rotary member (126) includes at least one ball-shaped closure part (127) having a through hole (129), said at least one ball-shaped closure part (127) being configured in such a way that when said rotary member (126) is located in said first position said at least one ball-shaped closure part (127) seal-ingly closes said at least one first through hole (122', 122") and when said rotary member (126) is located in said second position the through hole (129) of said at least one ball-shaped closure part (127) is aligned with said at least one first through hole (122', 122") to allow the fluid to flow between the upper chamber (120) and the lower chamber (118).

10 . Container according to claim 8 or claim 9, wherein said manually-operated control means (128) are formed by a control knob located at one end of said rotary member (126).
