What is claimed is:
1. An audio system for a vehicle having a plurality of seat positions, said audio system comprising:
a plurality of sources of music audio signals, wherein music content differs among the music audio signals from different said sources;
a respective directional loudspeaker array mounted at each seat position and coupled to the plurality of sources so that the music audio signals drive the respective directional loudspeaker array to radiate acoustic energy;
control circuitry that is coupled to the plurality of sources, wherein any of said sources are selectable to any of said seat positions through the control circuitry in response to an input received by the control circuitry from an occupant of the vehicle; and
processing circuitry coupled to the control circuitry and between the plurality of sources and each said respective directional loudspeaker array, wherein, for each first said seat position independently of each other said seat position and responsively to the control circuitry, the processing circuitry directs, to the respective directional loudspeaker array mounted at the first seat position, music audio signals from a said source that is selected by the input.
2. The system as in claim 1, wherein the plurality of sources comprise a multiple compact disk player.
3. The system as in claim 1, wherein the plurality of sources comprise channels of a radio.
4. The system as in claim 1, wherein the processing circuitry processes the music audio signals directed to each seat position independently of the music audio signals directed to each other said seat position.

5. The system as in claim 1, wherein the processing circuitry includes equalization circuitry and wherein the equalization circuitry equalizes the music audio signals directed to each seat position independently of the music audio signals directed to each other said seat position.
6. The system as in claim 1, wherein the processing circuitry includes balance circuitry and wherein the balance circuitry balances the music audio signals directed to each seat position independently of the music audio signals directed to each other said seat position.
7. The system as in claim 1, wherein the processing circuitry includes dynamic volume control circuitry and wherein the dynamic volume control circuitry controls volume of the music audio signals directed to each seat position independently of the music audio signals directed to each other said seat position.
8. An audio system for a vehicle having a plurality of seat positions, said audio system comprising:
a plurality of sources of audio signals, wherein content differs among the audio signals from different said sources;
a respective directional loudspeaker array mounted at each seat position and coupled to the plurality of sources so that the audio signals drive the respective directional loudspeaker array to radiate acoustic energy;
control circuitry that is coupled to the plurality of sources, wherein any of said sources are selectable to any of said seat positions through the control circuitry in response to an input received by the control circuitry from an occupant of the vehicle; and
processing circuitry coupled to the control circuitry and between the plurality of sources and each said respective directional loudspeaker array, wherein for each first said seat position independently of each other said seat position and responsively to the control circuitry, the processing circuitry directs, to the respective directional loudspeaker array mounted at the first seat position, audio signals from a said source that is selected by the input, and
for each said first seat position independently of each other said seat position and responsively to the control circuitry, the processing circuitry processes the audio signals directed to each seat position independently of the audio signals directed to each other said seat position.
9. The system as in claim 8, wherein the processing circuitry includes equalization circuitry and wherein the equalization circuitry equalizes the audio signals directed to each seat position independently of the audio signals directed to each other said seat position.
10. The system as in claim 8, wherein the processing circuitry includes balance circuitry and wherein the balance circuitry balances the audio signals directed to each seat position independently of the audio signals directed to each other said seat position.
11. The system as in claim 8, wherein the processing circuitry includes dynamic volume control circuitry and wherein the dynamic volume control circuitry controls volume of the audio signals directed to each seat position independently of the audio signals directed to each other said seat position.
12. The system as in claim 1, wherein each respective directional loudspeaker array comprises a plurality of acoustic elements, and wherein the processing circuitry applies respective element-specific transfer functions to audio signals applied to the acoustic elements of each respective directional loudspeaker array.

13. A method of providing audio signals at a plurality of seat positions of a vehicle, comprising:
providing a plurality of sources of audio signals, wherein content differs among the audio signals from different said sources;
providing a respective directional loudspeaker array at each seat position and driving the respective directional loudspeaker arrays with the audio signals from the plurality of sources to radiate acoustic energy;
selectively coupling any source of the plurality of sources to any of the seat positions independently of any other of the seat positions; and
for each first said seat position independently of each other said seat position, directing audio signals from a said source that is selectively coupled to the first seat position to the respective directional loudspeaker array at the first seat position.
14. The method as in claim 13, wherein, in the step of providing a plurality of sources of audio signals, the plurality of audio sources comprise a multiple compact disk player.
15. The method as in claim 13, wherein, in the step of providing a plurality of sources of audio signals, the plurality of audio sources comprise channels of a radio.
16. The method as in claim 13, wherein the directing step comprises processing the audio signals directed from the selectively coupled source to the respective directional loudspeaker array at the first seat position independently of audio signals directed to each other said seat position.
17. The method as in claim 13, wherein the directing step comprises equalizing the audio signals directed from the selectively coupled source to the respective directional loudspeaker array at the first seat position independently of audio signals directed to each other said seat position.
18. The method as in claim 13, wherein the directing step comprises balancing the audio signals directed from the selectively coupled source to the respective directional loudspeaker array at the first seat position independently of audio signals directed to each other said seat position.
19. The method as in claim 13, wherein the directing step comprises controlling volume of the audio signals directed from the selectively coupled source to the respective directional loudspeaker array at the first seat position independently of audio signals directed to each other said seat position.
